When Do We Stop Believing in People?

Take a moment to picture a baby learning to walk. It’s a universal scene—one that stirs hope and joy in anyone who witnesses it. The baby stumbles, falls, tries again. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, how many falls happen, or how clumsy the process looks. Everyone watching knows, without a doubt, that this child will walk.

No one tells the baby, “It’s too late for you.” No one says, “Maybe walking isn’t meant for you—look at all the times you’ve failed!” Or, “Why are you even trying? Everyone else already figured it out—what’s the point of you walking too?”
No one sits the baby down and says, “It’s safer if you just stay seated. You’re going to hurt yourself if you keep going. There’s too much risk. Better to accept your limits.”
We don’t do that. Instead, we cheer for every wobbly step. We celebrate every fall as proof that they’re getting closer. We hold their tiny hands until they’re steady enough to stand on their own.
So… why do we stop believing in people as they grow? Why do we withhold that same faith when it comes to their dreams?
When did we start saying, “Maybe it’s too late for you,” or “This isn’t written for you”? When did we become so quick to judge someone’s journey instead of encouraging them to keep going?
An adult pursuing their dream is no different than a baby learning to walk. They will stumble. They will fall. They may take longer than others. But they deserve the same support, the same encouragement, the same unwavering belief that they can and will succeed.
As women, we often carry the weight of expectations—the need to prove ourselves, the fear of judgment, the burden of “playing it safe.” How many of us have sat on the sidelines of our own dreams because someone told us it was too risky? Or worse, because we started believing that voice in our own head?
I invite you to reflect: when did you stop believing in yourself? When did you start doubting your ability to take those first wobbly steps toward the life you want?
And most importantly—how can you begin again?
Because the truth is, it’s never too late to stand up, no matter how many times you’ve fallen. The world does need your unique journey. And you absolutely deserve to take every step toward your dream.
So, let’s believe in ourselves—and each other—the way we believe in babies learning to walk. Because we’re all meant to move forward, one step at a time.
