﷽
Hey there, let’s dive into something personal yet universally relatable – the intersection of faith and self-leadership.
Before anything else, I want to emphasize that each person has their own faith, and there’s no coercion when it comes to beliefs. What I’m about to share with you is simply my experience, but I believe the ideas can be applied in one way or another to each of us.

Reflecting on the Journey:
So, picture this: Ramadan rolls around, a month of fasting from dawn till sunset. Now, this isn’t just about skipping meals; it’s a spiritual journey, a test of discipline, and a chance for introspection (For those who don’t know, I converted 9 years ago, by my own initiative).
As I embraced this challenge, I couldn’t help but wonder:
- How does my faith play into my sense of self?
- Can it nudge me towards becoming a better leader of my own life?
- How does our belief system influence our perception of self?
- Can faith serve as a catalyst for personal growth and empowerment?
Navigating Ramadan: A Test of Self-Leadership:
Usually, people, including myself in the past, adapt during this month to stay awake longer and work during the hours when it’s allowed to eat and drink water (from sunset to dawn). This year was different; this year, I woke up before dawn at 4 AM and started working and doing my daily activities just like before, without falling asleep at all during the day. And shortly after sunset, I would fall asleep. So, I was carrying out all my activities while fasting. Every day, including Saturdays and Sundays, for over 2 weeks now.
Let’s zoom into it
This year, amidst the spiritual observance, I embarked on a profound personal experiment as an opportunity for self-mastery.
Waking up before the crack of dawn, facing the temptation to hit snooze (in the first days – now I’m waking up without alarm), and just give in. But, hey, I made a pact with myself – this Ramadan was going to be different. Instead of coasting through, I decided to lean into it.
And guess what? It wasn’t just about surviving; it was about thriving.
Yet, by leveraging the principles of self-leadership, I persisted. I structured my day with purpose, maintaining productivity and focus.
With each passing day, I felt a surge of empowerment. I wasn’t just fasting; I was leading myself through it, mastering my body and mind in ways I never imagined possible.
Personal Development: Self-Leadership
Moreover, I took a stand and decided to lead my own path in life. To set healthy boundaries in certain relationships, to clarify certain ideas and dreams, to say no to what is not in line with my vision, to not settle for half-measures, and to ask for what I need.
And it wasn’t easy; it was disappointing, it was hard, but I knew I was doing what was necessary, and I had confidence in something greater than myself that this was the right process.
Now, let’s take a moment to reflect on what this journey taught me about myself. Besides the fact that my sleep has significantly improved, my productivity has also increased considerably – the fact that I managed to apply self-leadership also helped me with integrity and self-esteem.
- First off, setting boundaries became second nature. Whether it was resisting the urge to break my fast early or prioritizing my tasks during fasting hours, I learned the importance of defining my limits and sticking to them.
- Secondly, integrity became my guiding principle. Every decision, whether big or small, was made with unwavering honesty and authenticity.
- Lastly, resilience became my superpower. No matter the obstacle, I faced it head-on, knowing that every challenge was an opportunity for growth.
Lessons for Business Leadership
Now, let’s switch gears from personal to professional. Believe it or not, The parallels between faith-based self-leadership and effective business leadership are striking.
Take setting boundaries, for example. Just as I set fasting hours, leaders need to define boundaries within their organizations. It’s about saying, “Hey, this is what we stand for, and this is where we draw the line.“
And let’s not forget about integrity. Whether it’s resisting that extra cookie during fasting hours or staying true to your company’s values when faced with a tempting shortcut, integrity is non-negotiable.
Whether adhering to religious principles or ethical business practices, consistency and authenticity are fundamental.
